FERPA Awareness Training

To help protect student privacy, the U.S. Department of Education provides free online training to colleges and universities. All faculty and staff can access the 35-45 minute training: FERPA 101: For Colleges & Universities.

To register a new account for the training modules, follow these instructions:

  1. Open the training modules page: https://usferpatraining-console.lrn.com/login.

  2. Select “New User” (below the Login Name and Password).

  3. Provide the details of your first name, last name, state, and organizational affiliation.

  4. Set your username and password.

  5. Click on “Register” at the bottom of the registration form.

  6. Once you login with your username and password, select the FERPA training module session you would like to take (e.g. "FERPA 101: Colleges and Universities")

This online training course was developed by the Student Privacy Policy Office's Privacy Technical Assistance Center as an introduction to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and its requirements relating to the privacy and security of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) in student records.

This course addresses FERPA basics, explores requirements for the protection of student records for colleges, universities, and other postsecondary institutions, addresses who may and may not access student records, when those records may be shared, and discusses several of the applicable exceptions to the FERPA requirement for consent.
