Faculty Professional Development

Overview

Lincoln University (LU) is committed to fostering scholarship, professional development, and dissemination of new research and supporting its faculty in this endeavor. The LU President's Faculty Grant Program exists for this purpose. Although LU utilizes strict guidelines for the distribution of funds to ensure fairness and equity throughout the university, the availability of professional development funds constitutes the President’s strong support of LU faculty’s development. Currently the total award Budget is $25,000 per year (subject to availability of funds).

Eligibility and Priority

First, the candidate must fulfill the criteria stated in the guidelines. In general, the criteria specify that the money will be awarded to a full-time or part-time faculty member conducting or presenting peer-reviewed papers or posters at regional, national, or international conferences. Second, priority will be given to applicants who have no alternative sources of support (external grants, consulting contracts, etc.) Third, priority will be given to applicants who have not received an award from this program in the last two cycles. The application form includes an item for each applicant to indicate his/her recent support history from the program. Only faculty who provided their development plans for the academic year of funding are eligible for their proposal review. The award is limited to $3,000 annually.

Purpose

The funds received from LU President’s Faculty Grant Program may be used for the following purposes:

  • Attending conferences, workshops, exhibitions, and seminars pertaining to either faculty’s teaching areas or scholarship, including support for administrative roles in conferences or workshops.
  • Support for research directly related to one’s scholarship or teaching, including: purchasing books, data sets, assessments, journals, professional memberships, lab supplies, instruments, analytical and testing services. Items purchased become the property of Lincoln University.
  • Presenting new research (Paper, Poster, Round table, or Panel) or other scholarly work (Invited paper, Keynote address) for academic peers.
  • Professional travel related to faculty professional development (transportation, lodging, meals).
  • Support for materials to develop new courses.
  • Other activities not directly referenced that foster join faculty-student scholarship or enhance instructional skills (individual or institutional).
  • Costs related to public dissemination of scholarly products including publication or performance.

The LU President’s Faculty Grant Program is intended to supplement faculty’s out-of-pocket costs for the project or activity, not cover the entire project. The grant funding provides up to $2,000 in travel support that may be applied to the costs of conference attendance and participation in the U.S., and up to $3,000 in travel support for conferences held outside the U.S.

Review Process

The applicant self nominates him/herself for the grant. The application with the project description (the description must contain the introduction, research questions, methodology, results/expected results, and budgets, but not exceed 1,000 words) is sent to the Grant Nomination Committee arranged by the Provost’s Office with participation of Lincoln University Faculty Association for review. The Nomination Committee will review and rank the applications. The Committee may, if necessary, utilize an independent reviewer and make a suggestion for the grant distribution to the President. The President will make the ultimate approval to distribute the funds.

The grant is distributed semiannually: in Fall and Spring semesters. The deadline to submit the application and application-related materials is September 30 for Fall and March 30 for Spring considerations. The review process takes a total of 30 days. The applicants are notified of the decision by November 1 (for Fall) and May 1 (for Spring). The grant recipients are required to report results of use of the received funds to the Provost’s Office no later than 12 months after receiving the award.

Application

To be considered for the LU President’s Faculty Grant Program, the Application Form must be accompanied by a description of the project, paper, presentation and/or platform (e.g. conference) where the presentation will be made AND a copy of the faculty’s most recent CV.
