Getting a California ID or License

Driver's License (DL)

A California driver’s license (DL) is a card which gives you permission to operate a motor vehicle. A DL includes your true full name, birthdate, mailing address, signature, photograph, and physical description. The card must be in your possession anytime you operate a motor vehicle. A Driver’s License is required to purchase a car and obtain auto insurance. Be sure to review the DMV’s Educational Materials for information on the written and driving skills tests, sample exams, safety videos, and more.

Identification (ID) Card

A California driver’s license is the primary form of identification. International students and scholars who do not drive can obtain a California Identification (ID) card instead. The DMV website offers detailed guidelines on obtaining an ID card.

Online Application

DL and ID Cards are issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website outlines the process for obtaining:

To complete the Driver's License / ID Card Application you will need the following documents:

  • ID such as passport or original birth certificate
  • Two documents that prove you are a California resident (for example: cell phone bill, utility bill, bank statement, etc.)
  • Social security number

For more information regarding the SSN requirement, see Social Security Number Supplemental Requirements

"DMV electronically verifies your name, birth date, and SSN with the Social Security Administration (SSA), and the DHS while you are in the DMV office. If the response from the SSA states that you, your spouse, or your minor child is not eligible for an SSN, the field office technician will issue the appropriate license or identification document."

Book an Appointment

Once you have all your documents and have submitted your application, Book a DMV Appointment at a nearby field office. Be sure to check for wait times, as the DMV wait times can be notoriously long.
