Can I do CPT while I'm waiting for my OPT approval?
No. CPT is only available prior to the completion of your degree program. If you have applied for OPT, it means you have completed your program already, therefore CPT is not available anymore.
How long does it take to get authorization for OPT and when should I apply?
Average of 1-5 months. Because of that, we recommend (if you are sure about your program completion date) that you apply for the authorization well in advance of the date you wish to start working. You may apply up to 90 days before completion of studies and no later than 60 days after. Your application must be filed to USCIS within 30 days of the DSO signature on the Form I-20.
Do I need to have a job or job offer to apply for OPT?
No. If you don't a job or offer yet. You can submit a personal explanation regarding how you are going to secure an employment that's directly connect to your major area of study (please see the sample here).
How do I decide which start date to request?
Weigh the pros and cons of an early vs. late start date. If you choose an earlier start date, you may be able to begin your employment earlier, BUT if you don't find a job, you will begin accruing unemployment days sooner. If you choose a later start date, your unemployment days (maximum 90 days allowed) will begin accruing later, BUT you'll have to wait longer to begin employment.

What type of status am I on during OPT?
F-1. OPT is not a different immigration status. A person with OPT authorization is still an F-1 Student holding an EAD for OPT.
Can I work on or off campus while waiting for my EAD?
No. Once you complete your degree, you cannot work on or off campus until you have the EAD in your possession. And, you may not begin working until your approved EAD start date, regardless of the requested date on your I-20.
Why is the start date on my EAD card later than my requested start date?
It is not guaranteed that you will be approved for the start date you request. Your approved start date on your EAD card may be later than your requested start date, depending on when you apply for OPT and how long it takes USCIS to approve it.
Can I travel while OPT is pending?
Travel during the OPT application process is allowed, but not recommended as it poses certain risks.
